BUNCO 2026

Banned Books

On March 8th the Library hosted our annual Bunco event.

The theme this year was Banned Books.   This theme was chosen as we were surprised to find some of the books we grew up loving on a banned book list.  Some of these books were required reading in high school and college…..and some of them we have read to our children or grandchildren.

Did you know that that Charlotte’s  Web is on a banned book list because it has talking animals and that is viewed as “unnatural and blasphemous”.

Huckleberry Finn, written by famous American author Mark Twain, finds itself on the banned book list because of racial slurs and harmful stereotypes.

A Dr. Seuss  favorite, The Lorax, is banned due to its negative portrayal of the logging industry.  It was considered anti-business/anti-logging by timber dependent communities who feared it would unfairly indoctrinate children against the forestry industry.

The Giving Tree was banned because of accusations of sexism.  A selfless female tree gives everything to a selfish male character, promoting unhealthy relationships according to the banners.

We had a sell-out crowd who enjoyed an afternoon of Bunco with friends.  A yummy lunch was served and our coffee barista, Matt Gebis served up specialty coffees.  A lovely dessert bar topped off the lunch.

Prizes were awarded.  Twenty-seven auction baskets were auctioned off and a  Queen of Bunco was crowned.

A good time was had by all in attendance!

We wish to thank our barista, Matt Gebis.  Matt owns Espresso a Mano.  His coffee shops are located  on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, the Three Points Bakery in Squirrel Hill and on Potomac Avenue in Dormont.  Matt’s shops have been recognized in Food & Wine’s Magazine as being among the top coffee shops in the United States.

We wish to thank the following patrons and businesses who generously donated baskets for auction:  Dana Boyd, Jen Denitti, Gerry Jack, Linda Lee, The Big Barn Country Store, Dee’s Designs, Rinnie’s Place, Perry Floral, Old Thyme Herb Shop, Bad Wolf Studio, Bad Rabbit Café, and Kiss My Sass Jewelry.

We also wish to thank the following student volunteers who donated their time…..and we  couldn’t have done it without them!

Kaity Porter, Carrington Vallee, Eli Tidholm, Scarlet Kunder, Vivian Paroda, Mya Atkinson, Madison Wren, Lucas Denitti, Bella Glover, Genevieve Minnicks, and Ona Sinal.
