Our History
The Frazier Community Library…a small-town jewel!
The thought of a library in Perryopolis originated when Mary Fuller Frazier bequeathed $1.5 million dollars to the then little mining hamlet that was Perryopolis in 1948. Ms. Frazier was born in the small town of Perryopolis, where her parents and grandparents lived. She left Perryopolis at the age of 17 and only returned once in the next 60 years.
She knew the town of her birth needed help and upon her passing in 1948, she specified in her will that her bequest be used for “public, charitable, literary or educational purposes” thus providing Perryopolis with schools, a library, and even streetlights.
In 1958, the newly built Frazier High School was opened. Ms. Frazier’s wish was that the residents of Perryopolis and surrounding communities be allowed access to the school library as well as the students at the high school. In November 1960, the Mary Fuller Frazier School/Community Library was formally dedicated.
The two entities co-existed to the benefit of both for 63 years.
In June 2023, the library moved from the school district and relocated to the Leader Building on Liberty Street and celebrated a grand reopening in September 2023.
The Community Library continues to open its doors and welcome all to participate in the programs and activities the library offers to Perryopolis and surrounding communities, thereby fulfilling the last wishes of the town benefactor, without whom Perryopolis would be a very different place.
